Description of paper mashie
The basic method of making paper mashie starts with waste paper which is soaked in water for a few days until it disintegrates and turns into pulp. water is drained from the mixture and cloth, rice straw and bonding agents are mixed to form a pulp. This pulpy mixture is placed in a mould and left to dry for a couple of days. Once the pulp is dry, the shape is cut from the mould in halves and then glued together again. The surface is then coated with the layers of glue and gypsum, rubbed smooth and pasted with layers of paper. A base colour is painted on, and now the item is ready for the artist to grace it with his design. The designs can be very intricate as with floral motifs or scenes from traditional folklore or elementary with flowers, birds or traditional motifs. Gold is an essential colour in traditional motifs and is used to impart grace and value. Traditional paper mashie articles are small boxes ,trays ,stars and vases. Some of the vases that we offer are upto 4 feet in height and carry intricate designs that may take upto months to make. For some years now, paper machie has been used to make Christmas and Easter decorations with traditional Christian designs like the star and eggs. The Christmas tree decorations are always a big demand product because of their vibrant colours and light weight. Since the products are lacquered the life of the product is enhanced and they are resistant to water. This paper machie has been manufactured by highly skilled artisans to the highest standard ensuring quality to perform beyond extreme and stay styled.
